We have been looking at Art Work by James Rizzi and decided to have a try at his style of work ourselves.

This is the beginning of our art work.

Today Susie came out to Halswell School to teach the year 3 and 4s how to do a self portrait with charcoal.
Firstly we traced around a photograph and then used willow charcoal sticks and then charcoal pencils to colour in/ shade/ smudge  our pictures.

I'm wondering if there was more charcoal on your hands or on the paper?????

ONE OF THE BEST DAYS EVER

Today Room 19 had the privilege of contributing to the re-start of the Art Centre.
Last week, Susie, from the Art Gallery, came out and helped us plan and draw murals about what we can remember from the Art Centre prior to the earthquakes. We included pictures of the sculptures, buildings, tram, jugglers and lots more.
 Some lovely Art Gallery workers then transferred our art work onto large pieces of wood (220cm by 120cm)
Today we travelled into the Art Centre and painted the murals. It took us from 10 o'clock until 2.30 to get everything finished. Firstly we painted all the bigger areas of colour and then the smaller areas and then finally we used black paint and very small paint brushes to add detail. Then just like true artists we signed our names on the murals.
  Even though we all had painting shirts on there seemed to be quite  a lot of paint on clothes, legs, shoes and some even made it to faces!!!! 
A big thank you to all the wonderful parent helpers and Will Perkins, your painting ability was quite good! :)
The 8 murals will be displayed in the Art Centre Market Square for everyone to see. 

A BIG THANK YOU to Susie, (we love working with you), and the Art Gallery workers for all your hard work drawing our pictures out on to the wood.

Another BIG THANK YOU to Andre, Arts Centre CEO, for letting us come in and for the water bottles and ice blocks.

We are very proud to be part of the re-start of the Art Centre and proud of our art work.

It was such an exciting day and we will be even more excited when we see ourselves on CTV and in The Press. Woo Hoo !

Yesterday Emily, from the Christchurch Art Gallery, came out to work with us. We looked at Eileen Mayo art work and then we created our own versions. This is the process of our work.

Art Gallery

Last week we participated in the Christchurch Art Gallery Outreach programme. Emily came out to teach us about printmaking. It was so much fun and the results were fabulous.

First we did crayon rubbings of leaf shapes with green, black and blue crayons. We covered the paper in rubbings. Where there were white paces we used texture boards to fill in the spaces.

Next we used green and blue dye. The blue dye went over the green crayon and the green dye went over the black and blue crayon.

We  waited for the dye to dry.

While we waited we drew a large leaf shape on polystyrene, cut it out than using our pencil added some texture to the leaf.

Using white ink we rolled it on to the leaf and them stamped it on to the picture.

The result was AMAZING.
When the ink was dry , we made frames with black paper and silver stickers.

A very special event

After the terrible earthquakes in Christchurch and Japan  Mr Kuroda, a famous artist from Japan, wanted to do something special to bring the children from Christchurch and Japan some happiness.

Last September Mr Kuroda came to Halswell School and worked with a a small group of children on pieces of artwork. Mr Kuroda drew a different bird for each child and then the children coloured it in.  Mr Kuroda took the artwork back to Japan and a group of children from the area hit by the earthquake coloured in the backgroud of the picture. This was such a wonderful experience for the children.

Today Mr Kuroda came back with the finished art work. The art pieces looked amazing.
What very lucky children to have this experience and to now have a piece of art work to keep and also a special link to another children in Japan who have shared similar experiences

Art with Mr Kuroda on PhotoPeach Mr Kuroda also had a surprise visitor for us. A very famous Okinawa instrument singer, Ms.Misako Kojya, who is a professional singer, hosting her own concerts in Japan and performing on TV, performed a concert for us. Beautiful music :)

Insect Art Work

Today we did some insect topic art work........but we did it a little bit differently. Miss Tempero saw a very cool art idea on a blog, so we copied it.   mini-michelangelos
We looked at Michelangelo's Art work on the Sistine Chapel.His art work is very famous.
Hamish said it was very interesting art work, but Michelangelo must have been very tired doing it for so many years.
Charlotte thought the pictures were pretty and Makenzie thought the art work was amazing.
Max thought it would be very hard to do and also very frustrating.
Michelangelo lay on his back to do the painting on the ceiling.
So thats what we did. We sellotaped paper to the bottom of our desks and drew pictures with our pencils.

• we cut out lots of pictures of things we like and glued them on to paper
• took a side on photo of ourselves
• printed the photos and then carefully out the shape of our head 
• then cut the outline in black paper
• glued the black paper over the pictures
