Christchurch from Space

Canadian astronaut on the International Space Station caught a glimpse of Christchurch just after last night’s Earth Hour ended.

Daily 5

 We are doing AMAZING work during Daily 5. We now make choices for our daily rotations, with our stamina lasting up to 20 minutes. While we are doing our daily 5 rotations some children work in groups or as individuals on our CAFE goals.
 We LOVE daily 5

This weeks topic is all about welcoming new classes and seeing what gets kids excited about their learning.

Question 1: What has been the best thing you have done since coming back to school in 2013?
Question 2: How do you learn best? What can teachers do to make learning fun?

New School foundations

Yesterday we had a visitor - Ed, Max's dad. He was here to have a look at a new drilling method.
There are lots of machines and people digging holes in our field. They are trying out new testing methods of foundations.
Ed told us -

• they are looking for the hardest layer in the ground to put the foundations on   
• this is so if there is another big earthquake the liquefaction wont come up through the concrete
• they are going to make the foundations thicker so hopefully the concrete wont crack during an earthquake
• cement is made out of limestone, you have to stir it up in a machine
• some of the men testing the ground were looking at graphs about how hard the ground was and how many large shakes it would take to move it
• School foundations are harder than house foundations
• they are mixing the cement with the dirt from in the ground
• the holes are 5 m deep
• they are using a rotary mixing head 
• when they were using the rotary mixing head mixer water and silt was bubbling up
• steam was coming off the rotary mixer because it was going so fast 
•   

ROCK STARS

Today I took Sullivan, Kate and Mila on a course with me. We went all the way over to Chisnallwood Intermediate and created a band!
Kevin Honeycutt ( he's from America) taught us how to make music with Garageband. We had time to experiment with different instruments and then put together our band. 

Sullivan rocked it out on the drums and guitar. He even was brave enough to go up on the stage by himself and play with Kevin Honeycutt.

Kate and Mila sang and played instruments, they sounded just like Taylor Swift and Katie Perry.

Today Susie came out to Halswell School to teach the year 3 and 4s how to do a self portrait with charcoal.
Firstly we traced around a photograph and then used willow charcoal sticks and then charcoal pencils to colour in/ shade/ smudge  our pictures.

I'm wondering if there was more charcoal on your hands or on the paper?????
